About Dr. Amir Zangiabadi

Dr. Amir Zangiabadi is a Consultant Respiratory Physician and Interventional Pulmonologist. He currently holds a public appointment in respiratory medicine at Frankston Hospital and consults at Peninsula Private and Holmesglen Private Hospitals.

He obtained his fellowship of The Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2016, undertaking training in respiratory medicine at Flinders Medical Centre and The Royal Adelaide Hospital, followed by a fellowship in intensive care medicine at Monash Medical Centre.

He gained further experience in the field of lung cancer and pleural disease during a clinical fellowship in interventional pulmonology at Glenfield Hospital in Leicester, United Kingdom.

He has an interest in all respiratory disorders and is adept in the management of patients with a broad mix of respiratory conditions including chronic cough, asthma, COPD, bronchiectasis, and interstitial lung disease. He specialises in lung cancer and pleural disease with skills in minimally invasive methods of diagnosing and staging lung cancer, and management of pleural infection and malignancies.

He performs diagnostic chest ultrasound, chest drain insertion, bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS), local anaesthetic video thoracoscopy, and indwelling pleural catheter insertions for management of refractory pleural effusions.

Dr Zangiabadi is Iranian and speaks both English and Farsi.

Interventional Bronchoscopy

Dr Zangiabadi is skilled in performing endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) bronchoscopy and biopsy of intra-thoracic lymph nodes. This is a minimally invasive method for diagnosis and staging of both malignant (e.g lung cancer and metastatic cancer) and non-malignant lung conditions (e.g. sarcoidosis, TB).

Pleural Diseases

Dr Zangiabadi is experienced in the diagnosis, investigation and management of pleural effusions (fluid around the lung) and pneumothorax (collapsed lung). He uses bedside chest ultrasound to assist him with chest drain insertion for removal of fluid or air around the lung.

He also performs local anaesthetic video assisted thoracoscopy (insertion of camera in thorax) to obtain biopsies in patients with suspicious lung or pleural malignancies.

He is also skilled in the insertion of indwelling pleural catheters (semi-permanent drains) for management of recurrent pleural effusions.
